A village with a river through the middle
Morton Grove sits about 5.5 miles northwest of our storefront in a straight line. The North Branch of the Chicago River runs through the middle of the village, and both banks are Cook County Forest Preserve land, with the Ralph Frese Trail along it. So tell us early which side of the river the car is on.
Pace runs its Pulse Dempster Line along Dempster Street, and Metra’s Milwaukee District North Line stops at Morton Grove station. Waukegan Road and Lincoln Avenue are the other names you’ll hear most. The village grew after the Edens Expressway opened and cut the commute to Chicago.
About 85 percent of homes here are owner-occupied and roughly three in four are single-family houses, by Census Bureau estimates. So a dead car here is most likely in a driveway or garage, which is exactly where the village’s rules come in.
Seven days, then it’s a nuisance
Morton Grove’s definitions make a car inoperable after just 7 days with a flat tire, or with the engine, wheels or other parts removed, altered or damaged so it can’t move under its own power. Repairs lasting up to 10 days don’t count, and neither do cars kept inside a building. A car can be abandoned, too, if it can’t be driven, if it sits unmoved for 7 days or more on a public street or lot, or if it’s on private property without the owner’s consent.
The code then calls inoperable and abandoned vehicles nuisances, on public or private property alike. Under section 5-7-4, the owner has to remove it, have it towed or shut it in a garage. Moving it a few feet or turning it around doesn’t count.
In other words, pushing a dead car to the other side of the driveway doesn’t reset anything. It has to leave, or go indoors.
Snow emergencies
When the village president declares a snow emergency, parking is allowed only on the even-numbered side on even days and the odd side on odd days, each day running from 9 a.m. to 8:59 a.m. the next morning. There are listed exceptions near Waukegan Road, Lincoln Avenue and Dempster Street.
A car that won’t start can’t swap sides overnight. If yours is at the curb and a storm is in the forecast, call us before the declaration, not after.
Donate or junk, and the next towns over
Some people would rather donate an old car, and our guide to junking or donating a car in Illinois compares the two. If it won’t start, that’s no obstacle for us. We pay cash for junk cars in Morton Grove running or not, keys or no keys, and the tow is free.
Skokie borders Morton Grove on the east, and Glenview is to the north. The rest of our list is on the service area page.
