A grid that makes pickups easy to describe
Skokie is about 3 miles northwest of our storefront in a straight line, and its street grid is the most helpful thing about it for a pickup. Major east-west streets come every half mile, from Old Orchard down to Touhy, with Dempster and Oakton in between. Skokie Boulevard, Crawford and McCormick run north-south.
So “Oakton and Crawford” or “Dempster just east of Skokie Boulevard” tells us almost exactly where the car is. A few older roads, Lincoln Avenue and Niles Center Road among them, cut across on the diagonal. Niles Center Road is a leftover from the village’s old name; it was Niles Center until a 1940 referendum renamed it Skokie.
The 7-day and 14-day rules
Skokie’s section 42-40 sets two clocks. A vehicle is abandoned if it’s in such disrepair it can’t be driven, or if it hasn’t moved or been used for 7 days in a row and looks deserted. It’s inoperable if the engine, wheels or other parts have been removed or damaged for 14 days so that it can’t move under its own power, with routine repairs excluded.
The part that catches homeowners is the nuisance clause. An inoperable vehicle in public view is a nuisance on private property as well as public. A car kept in a garage or other building is exempt; one on blocks in the driveway isn’t. If police end up towing an abandoned or inoperable car, the owner has to pay all the towing and storage charges before getting it back.
Just over half of Skokie’s homes are single-family houses, by Census Bureau estimates, so for many sellers the car in question is in a driveway or garage. Tell us which, and whether it rolls.
Snow days and the village license
After 2 inches of snow, as determined by the Village Manager, alternate-side parking applies on every roadway from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.: even-address side on even days, odd side on odd days. A car that won’t run is stuck on whichever side it died on, so a winter breakdown at the curb needs a plan fast.
Skokie also requires a village vehicle license for residents’ vehicles. When you dispose of a car, the code lets you move that license to the next vehicle you acquire, never to another person.
Old Orchard, the Yellow Line and next door
Westfield Old Orchard and the Yellow Line’s Dempster-Skokie terminal make handy landmarks, and the newer Oakton station serves downtown. We pay cash for junk cars in Skokie in any condition, including ones damaged by flood or fire, and our junk car removal page explains the pickup. If the title needs signing, our Illinois title guide walks through it. If it’s missing, list the papers you have and we’ll confirm on the call what Illinois accepts.
The North Shore Channel Trail follows the Evanston border on the east. Morton Grove is west of Skokie and Lincolnwood is south. See every area we cover on the service area page.
