From Linden station to Edens Plaza
Wilmette sits on Lake Michigan about 5.5 miles north of our storefront in a straight line. The Baha’i House of Worship, the only one in North America, stands across Sheridan Road from Wilmette Harbor, and Linden station, where the Purple Line ends, is the village’s only CTA stop. Farther west, the Edens Expressway opened in 1951 with Edens Plaza beside it.
Ridge Road was once the village’s eastern boundary, with the old Gross Point area west of it. Those names still help when you describe where the car is: east of Ridge, west of Ridge, near the plaza or near the harbor.
Lapsed plates and the 7-day notice
Wilmette’s code definitions are worth reading if your car has been parked a while. A vehicle left unattended on an alley, street, highway or village lot counts as abandoned if it’s inoperable, has no plates or temporary registration, or carries plates more than 30 days expired. A car is inoperable once its engine, wheels or other parts have been removed or altered for at least 7 days so it can’t be driven, with temporary repairs excluded.
On private property, section 14-368 makes an inoperable car in public view a nuisance. After a village notice, the owner has 7 days to dispose of it, a first offense brings a fine of at least $100, and police can then remove the car. Cars kept inside a building are exempt.
We buy cars with lapsed plates. Our guide to selling a car with expired registration in Illinois covers the paperwork, and if the title is missing as well, tell us what documents you have and we’ll confirm on the call what Illinois allows.
Snow on narrow streets
Once snow reaches 2 inches, section 14-327 bans parking on every Wilmette street until 24 hours after the snow stops or plowing is done, whichever comes first. On streets 27 feet wide or narrower, section 14-328 makes one signed side, usually the hydrant side, no-parking during any snow, sleet or ice event and for 24 hours after. Some blocks also post overnight no-parking signs, 2:00 to 5:00 in the morning, that residents petitioned for under section 14-299.
A dead car can’t obey any of those. If it’s on the street and winter is close, selling it before the first storm keeps it out of the plow’s way.
Crash damage, the village license and next door
We buy accident-damaged cars as they are, no repairs first. Wilmette charges an annual vehicle license fee on each vehicle registered with the state to a Wilmette address.
We pay cash for junk cars in Wilmette from Linden station to Edens Plaza. Tell us the address and whether the car is in a driveway, a garage or at the curb. Evanston is just south, and Glenview lies to the west. Our full list is on the service area page.
