Across Howard Street from Chicago

Evanston begins where Chicago ends, at Howard Street, about 3 miles north of our Western Ave storefront in a straight line. It runs north to Wilmette, with Skokie to the west and the lake to the east. Chicago Avenue, the continuation of Clark Street, is the main north-south road from Howard up to Northwestern University’s lakefront campus.

About half of Evanston’s homes are in buildings with five or more units, according to Census Bureau estimates, and only about a third are detached houses. So the car you want gone may well be in a shared lot or a building garage rather than a driveway. For those, clear access with the building first; our guide to pickup from condo and apartment parking goes through it.

The Purple Line is a quick way to tell us roughly where you are. Its stops, from South Boulevard up to Central, make easy reference points.

What Evanston’s code says about a car that won’t run

Evanston is strict about dead cars on private property. The city’s property maintenance amendments say no inoperative or unregistered motor vehicle may be parked, kept or stored on any premises, and no vehicle may sit in major disassembly or be stripped for parts. A separate clause rules out parking on grass, soil or rock.

On the street, section 10-6-1 treats a car on the public way as abandoned if it can’t be driven, hasn’t moved in 7 days, or has gone 2 days without valid plates or a temporary placard. It also defines a “derelict” vehicle, one missing its wheels, motor, battery or another part it needs. Section 10-6-2 lets the city tow derelict, hazardous and abandoned vehicles right away, without notice, from streets, public places or private property.

Wheel tax and snow nights

Evanston’s wheel tax covers any vehicle registered to an Evanston address, and the code says it applies whether or not the vehicle is actually driven. A dead car in the garage still counts. Once you sell, the license can move to another vehicle you own within 48 hours under section 10-8-5, but never to another person, so it doesn’t leave with the car.

Snow adds a deadline. Under section 10-4-13, once 2 inches fall in 24 hours, snow-route parking is banned from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Four inches brings a snow emergency starting at 8 a.m. and lasting 34 hours, with even-side and odd-side parking on the other streets. A dead car can’t hop to the legal side, so it’s the one the city tows.

Pickup, and the towns around Evanston

Getting cash for junk cars in Evanston works like it does on our side of Howard. Tell us the address, where the car is and whether it rolls. A car that won’t start is fine, keys or no keys, and same-day pickup is often possible.

South across Howard is Rogers Park. Skokie lies west, and Wilmette north. All of our areas are on the service area page.

Evanston questions

Can I keep a dead car in my Evanston driveway while I decide what to do?
Not under the city's code. Evanston bars keeping an inoperative or unregistered vehicle on any premises, and parking on grass or dirt is out too. Selling it ends the problem, and the tow is free.
Do I still owe Evanston wheel tax on a car that doesn't run?
If it's registered to an Evanston address, yes. The code says the wheel tax applies whether or not the vehicle is driven. After the sale, the license can move to your next vehicle within 48 hours, though not to another person.
Do you pick up near Northwestern?
Yes, from apartment lots, garages and the street, once you've cleared access with the building. Give us the address and the nearest corner off Chicago Avenue.
