When an old car stops being worth keeping
There’s rarely one moment. It’s the third repair estimate in a year, a failed emissions test, rust coming through the rocker panels, or a car that sits because nobody drives it anymore. If you’re weighing the next repair against letting it go, an offer gives you a real number to compare; send the car’s details through the form on our home page and we’ll call you back.
What sets the offer for an older car
For a car this age, the sale is usually about what it’s made of and what can be reused, not the badge on the grille:
- Weight and metal. Bigger, heavier vehicles carry more scrap metal.
- Usable parts. An engine, transmission or body panels that still have life in them.
- Whether it runs. Not required, but it’s part of the picture.
- Paperwork. A clean title in your name keeps the sale simple. If it’s missing, see selling a car without the title.

Emissions, plates and the last of the paperwork
In the Chicago area, most 1996 and newer gasoline cars need an emissions test after they turn four before the plates can be renewed, according to the Illinois EPA. An old car that fails is often the moment people decide to sell. You don’t need a passing test to sell it for scrap, and a vehicle issued a junking certificate drops out of testing.
Take your plates off before pickup. In Illinois they belong to you, and the Secretary of State allows a transfer to another vehicle you own.
Old cars in the suburbs
If an older car has been parked in a driveway or detached garage in Skokie, Morton Grove or Glenview, check the village rules: some limit how long an inoperable or unregistered car can stay in view. Their area pages explain the local codes. If the car won’t start at all, selling a car that won’t start covers that case, and junking versus donating helps if you’re torn about where it goes. Still running but tired? Compare junking, a private sale and a trade-in before you decide. Old work trucks and vans that have outgrown the driveway are covered on our box truck and semi page.
